World Tamil Movement HQ Raided in Montreal
According to the Asian Tribune the RCMP and Montreal police raided the World Tamil Movement headquarters in Montreal on April 14th, supposedly due to the latter’s support for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or Tamil Tigers. The raid came just days after the Harper government re-classified the LTTE a “terrorist” organization on Monday, a decision which was quickly condemned by the Canadian Tamil Congress.
While no arrests were made, computers, files, documents. LTTE flags and political material were all seized from the World Tamil Movement offices.
According to the Asian Tribune article:
…sources told the Asian Tribune that LTTE literature, magazines, CDs which were displayed all these years so prominently on the shelves of the Tamil shops in Toronto have suddenly disappeared. Even the photographs of the LTTE leader Prabhakaran which used to be displayed prominently in the Tamil shops have suddenly disappeared.Sounds to me like what is being described is a community that is being intimidated… by the Canadian State!
According to another source, Tamil radio stations in Toronto have cancelled the talk-back programs where the Canadian LTTE stalwarts and the propagandists use to participate.
The Asian Tribune article, while clearly biased against the LTTE, is of interest as so far it seems to be the only news of this on the web. You can read it here.
