Solving Canada's Polar Bear Problem

From today’s newspaper:

OTTAWA -- Polar bears will be extinct within 25 years as global warming shrinks the ice cover they depend on for feeding and giving birth, says a renowned Australian scientist.

The Arctic ice cap is shrinking by eight per cent a year and polar bears are already showing signs of severe stress, says Tim Flannery, one of Australia's best-known scientists and author of the current best-seller The Weather Makers.

In the past, polar bears typically gave birth to triplets, but now they usually have just one cub, he said. And the weaning time has risen to 18 months from 12, while the average weight has declined 15 per cent.

"Polar bears are going to go with the ice cap. They're not going to actually last that long,'' Flannery told a news conference Friday.

Citing other warning signs, he said British Columbia's Fraser River has been fatally warm to salmon for five of the last 13 years, while West Coast forests are being decimated by an infestation of pine beetles able to survive milder winters.

"These are unheralded signs of change. They simply haven't been seen in the past. They persuade me and the vast majority of my colleagues that the debate on climate change is well and truly over. The science is solid and the effects are there for everyone to see.''

Yipee! Capitalism is great! More cars! Less bears!

CAW's Hargrove Calls On PM To Ensure Peaceful Resolution To Six Nations Land Claim

PORT ELGIN, ON, April 22 /CNW/ - CAW president Buzz Hargrove is urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to ensure a responsible, peaceful and immediate end to the land claim dispute in Caledonia, Ontario.

Hargrove blasted Harper for escalating the overwhelming police presence in the dispute by having large numbers of RCMP officers dispatched to Caledonia.

"These actions have only served to inflame the peaceful actions of the native community who are defending their rights to reclaim their land," Hargrove states in an April 21 letter to Harper.

"Have the governments of the day not learned anything from the many previous disputes over native land claims? Peaceful negotiations, not police harassment and intimidation, is the way to proceed," Hargrove said.

Hargrove is calling on Harper's government to:

  • ensure all armed RCMP officers are withdrawn from the area immediately;

  • stop issuing illegal possessions of land;

  • set up a time-table for peaceful negotiations with the Six Nations people regarding their Caledonia land claim;

  • set a fast track to work toward resolving all unsettled land claims in Canada. There are more than 600 unsettled land claims in Canada.

"Historically the native community has been often discriminated against and no fair minded government should allow this shameful treatment of people to continue," Hargrove said.

Hargrove is also demanding that Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty remove the OPP presence and peacefully end the dispute immediately.

More than 800 delegates from coast to coast at CAW Council who are meeting in Port Elgin, Ontario have voted to have governments remove police and find a peaceful solution to the dispute.

Sage Advice On "Indigenous Protests And Occupations" From Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney To Current Prime Minister Stephen Harper

The following from Kahentinetha Horn’s Mohawk Nation News:

MNN.  April 21, 2006.  On Thursday, April 20th, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with former Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney in Montreal.  Did they talk about the Six Nations crisis and how to end it?  We think they might have.  Mulroney's "been there, done that".

Did Mulroney tell Harper, "First, you gotta make those Indians look bad.  Hire some top public relations firms and put 3 negative stories out for every positive one that goes out.  Tell them the Indians are breaking the law.  Keep the civil issues out of court.  They have too many valid papers and good argument.   Concentrate on laying criminal charges wherever and however you can.

"Confuse the public about the facts of the land issues.  Say they have no real evidence.    Allude constantly to the fact that they 'might' have weapons and criminal records.  Remember, the public won't read the word "might", they'll just read the words "weapons" and "criminal", which will scare them and keep them on our side.  This is now you manufacture the negative images so the public sees the Indians as the bad guys.  Say you are "defending law and order" {while you are evicting them from their legal property or stealing their resources).    Never mind that they might only have 2 by 4's, bats or a bag of stones.  Do not mention the millions of dollars you are spending to equip your police with M-16's, tasers, pepper spay, silencers and the latest in ultra high tech weaponry.

"Announce that negotiations were planned and that you want to solve the crisis peacefully.  Don't mention that the People themselves have been shut out of negotiations.  You will only deal with representatives and negotiators who are on your payroll.  Pay off the press so they don't report any of the "wrong" opinions that might bring out the truth.    Distract public attention by announcing that you will go on a tour of reserves to find out what the people need.  Support a known adversary of Indians like Maurice Vellacott as chair for the Commons Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.  This man spoke up for the Saskatoon police officers who took the law into their own hands and abandoned native youth on the notorious 'starlight" tours leaving to freeze to death.

"Announce your astonishment that the protesters won't leave peacefully.  Then surround them, point guns at them and do everything you can to scare them.  Forget about constitutional mobility rights.  Stop Canadian citizens who support the protesters from entering or leaving Six Nations territory.  If the Six Nations people keep resisting our invasion, some of them and even our cops might get killed or hurt.  Don't forget, there will be unarmed men, women and children there.  Remember that Indian Affairs policy has been to absorb the Indians into our "body politic" whether they want to be Canadians or not.  Your goal is to "clean it up" to allow American companies to make a mint by squatting on Indian land and turning Canadians into mortgage slaves.  Don't' forget Canada's economy has historically depended on clear cutting, mining, water diversions and generally despoiling the land.  The next time the Indians resist the government, you'll know what to do.  Set it up so there is no resistance.  You don't want another 'Oka' [the 1990 confrontation between the Mohawks and Quebec/Canada which brought in the police, the RCMP and then the army just like what's happening at Six Nations right now).

"An Indian occupation doesn't have to have many people.  All they want to do is to make a stand on a principle, like land title and resource rights.  Tell them, "You've made your point.  Now go home".   We use this line a lot.  Ignore the fact that there are no leaders.  Six Nations people, including our puppet government, agree that we are wrong.  We want to know and see who the main leaders and resisters are.  Yes, we need a target, someone to shoot at.  Don't forget we need to build up our military so we can support international American hegemony in the Middle East and elsewhere.  Don't forget, we got elected because of the support of American companies.  Don't bite the hands that feed us.  Keep saying, "No one will get hurt", if they do as they're told.  Let the main resisters know that the cops have every intention of taking them out.  Mind you, the cops don't want to do the killing of a resister.  Put native cops on the front line.  Talk about native factionalism all the time.  Train the cops to beat Indian prisoners so it doesn't leave bruises.  They'll die early of their injuries.  That's how we got rid of Lasagna of the Oka crisis.  It's dirty work but someone has to do it.  Bush and his illegal US administration will support us.  They want our resources.  The cops don't really care if they lose one of their own.  Does anyone remember Marcel LeMay who was killed at Oka?  If a cop gets killed by "friendly fire" pretend it was the "Injuns what done it".

"What happens if the Indians take some of our cops as prisoners and they find out they've been duped?  You have to say it's the Stockholm Syndrome and he's gone crazy.  He probably will be treated well by them.  This might be a good time to run a feature on old missionary fables.    Be wary of him getting an education on Indian matters while he's on salary.  They might want to exchange him for some of their people we've taken.   What they're after is to carry out the original and legal nation-to-nation relationship that was worked out between us so long ago.  We have to avoid that at all cost.

Then Stephen Harper downed his 6th beer and left Westmount for Ottawa to instruct his field officers on his ongoing battle with the Six Nations.  Eeks!  I woke up from this nightmare in a cold sweat.

Announcement of A&S Video and Resource Page On Six Nations Standoff

i received this from Autonomy & Solidarity this morning:

Dear friends and comrades,

From time to time we use this list to let you know about the projects we are undertaking and of updates to our website. In this message we would like to let you know that we have created a special resource page on our website with news articles, photos, videos, and up to date information about what is happening at the Six Nations Caledonia Blockade and the political context surrounding this struggle. As you most likely know this struggle has exploded into a serious conflict after a vicious police attack on protestors on the morning of April 20th.   Most recently we have posted a series of videos taken by A&S members that include footage of the camp, interviews with a member of the Mohawk warrior society, Mohawk Elder Jaqueline House, and Six Nations resident Robin Williams, and Mike D. who witnessed the police attack on the camp.  We also have video footage of the Mohawk barricade on Highway 6 being constructed.

All of this material is available on our website at http://auto_sol.tao.ca and can be freely appropriated for use by other activist sites and networks. We also encourage you to add material to our site by logging in and posting comments to update stories or provide additional information.

We also have an RSS feed for all material posted to our site dealing with the Six Nations occupation at Caledonia, so if you or your organization has a website with the capability to integrate newsfeeds we encourage you to link to us.  Our Caledonia/Six Nations feed can be found at: http://auto_sol.tao.ca/taxonomy/feed/or/217

Finally, the Six Nations activists blockading the Douglas Creek Estates request your assistance is coming to Caledonia to support them and folks  in Toronto are co-ordinating rides to and from Caledonia.  If you are looking for a ride to the blockade or if you can offer space  in your vehicle, please call Nick at 416-531-1831.

There is also an online ride board at  http://excoboard.com/exco/forum.php?forumid=91715

You can find more information on the blockade at http://www.urgentcalltoaction.com/

Driving directions from Toronto

  • Take the QEW west to Highway 403

  • Exit at Highway 403 and take it until Highway 6 South

  • Follow Highway 6 South all the way into Caledonia (at one point you  will have to make a right turn in order to keep following the highway -  follow the sign pointing to Caledonia).

  • Drive into Caledonia until you reach Caithness St. (also Highway 54), go East (left) on Caithness which becomes Munsee St. in Cayuga.

  • Stop at the Canadian Tire

  • it's easy to spot since the parking lot  is full of media vans. Park there.

  • Walk the rest of the way to the blockade along Caithness St.

What to bring, what to expect

DRESS WARMLY. Dress for rain.

If you can, it's a good idea to bring a tent, sleeping bag, blanket, etc. If you don't have these that's fine. Do be aware that the blockade is on a construction site, so expect mud, wind, and rough,  improvised accommodations. If you're staying overnight, don't count on getting a full night's sleep!

The blockade is well supplied with food, so you don't need to bring all your meals. Any food that you can contribute will be a big help, though. Depending on the circumstances you may also be able to go to Caledonia to eat.

There is a constant need for gas to run the generator. If you can bring any cans of gas (regular unleaded) to contribute, please do so.

Other supplies the blockaders are requesting:

  • AAA batteries

  • Disposable plates and cutlery

  • Milk of magnesia

  • Firewood and lumber

Finally, any monetary donations you can make will be greatly  appreciated. You can make cheques out to "Janie Jamieson".

In Struggle

Hamilton IMC

Check out the Hamilton Independent Media Centre - a lot of good photos, and also a great audio interview with Clan Mother Hazel Hill recorder yesterday during the re-reclamation.

Some Folks Do Get It

The following extended quote is from an article in this morning’s London Free Press.

i am certainly not going to be re-posting every mainstream media article, but will try and do another “media roundup” later today. However, the following is worth highlighting at the moment in order to dispel the racist lies being oh-so-innocently spread by the media, about scary lawless injuns and poor white volk who just wanna be left alone.

You see, some folks do get it:

Kathy Maher says everyone should take a lesson from the natives who forced the OPP to retreat from a disputed subdivision here yesterday.

"They all stick together and they all help each other," Maher said.

And they're the only ones prepared to stick it to the government, she said.

A resident of Argyle Street in this town south of Hamilton, Maher lives next door to Douglas Creek Estates, the housing subdivision that's been occupied by native protesters since Feb. 28.

Sitting on her lawn chair in the no-man's land between the police lines and a native barricade about 100 metres down the road, Maher said she was glad to see the protesters return after police moved in and arrested 16 of them before dawn.

When police launched the raid, not one stopped by to explain what was happening and to check if her family's home was all right.

But the natives did, she said.

"I had about six natives stop and make sure we were OK. They said, 'If you need anything, let us know.' "

One native woman talked to her kids as well, she said.

"She said not to be scared, that it is OK."

"They are people. They haven't done anything wrong," she said.

Maher said she hasn't been nervous living next door to the occupation and doesn't believe most of the other residents of the town are, either.

"The only thing I am nervous of is the OPP coming in with guns. The natives don't make me nervous at all."

Solidarity Demo in Montreal

April 20th 2006
Montreal
A group of about 30 demonstrators gathered for an emergency demonstration to denounce the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attack on indigenous protesters defending their land at Six Nations.

The demonstration, which was called with just a few hours notice, gathered at Cabot Park in downtown Montreal. After speeches by Misty and Tania, two local indigenous solidarity activists, the demonstration marched along Ste-Catherine Street. Protesters chanted: "Indigenous rights under attack, what do we do? Stand up and fight back"; "Land, freedom, self-determination, Canada is an illegal nation!"; and, in French: "Fin de l'occupation, respectez les Six Nations!"

Members of the Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Movement (IPSM) and allied groups will continue to raise awareness and mobilize to show support and solidarity with the indigenous resistance at Six Nations.

Tyendinaga Mohawks Shut Down Rail Lines in Solidarity with Six Nations

At roughly 12:00 AM, Thursday, April 20, 2006, Tyendinaga Mohawks blockaded the CN rail lines that run through the North end of the community in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Six Nations.

Haldimand Tract land - the area where the Caledonia housing development was planned - must be rightfully returned to the Men, Women, Warriors, Children and Chiefs of the Six Nations Haudensaunee Confederacy.

Tyendinaga is located south of the 401 between Kingston and Belleville.

We anticipate similar action will be taken in First Nations communities across the country and would encourage those communities not taking action of their own to make their way to Six Nations or join us here.

Six Nations does not stand alone.

Media Roundup re: Six Nations Reclamation

What kind of day was this, where hundreds of Ontario Provincial Police swarmed a peaceful Mohawk land reclamation?

The answer, of course, is that today was a day like any other.

Centuries of colonialism, settlerism, genocide, racism… different words which in this case describe the same process of displacement, marginalization and violent oppression.

I had to laugh seeing a white woman complaining in the video footage on the Pulse site – “Are they going to try and take your land? That’s the big issue,” she said. Ironic no?

What follows is a list of some of the news stories and press releases that have come out today.

Once again: people need to get to the reclamation site in Caledonia if they can (directions below). If you can’t (and let’s face it, most of us can’t) that doesn’t mean nothing can be done. This continent is full of targets. For starters, any wall can be postered, any news outlet can be picketed, any politician can be protested, any street corner can be leafleted.

Oh yeah, and there’s one hell of a lot of land that can be occupied…

How To Get To Caledonia, Ontario

How to get there:  From Niagara Falls and Toronto, take Highway 6 straight south from Hamilton to Caledonia.

From Buffalo take Highway 3 west to Highway 6 and north on Highway 6 to Caledonia.

From Windsor take Highway 3 East to Highway 6 and go north.

Evening Update From Kahentinetha Horn

What follows is an update on the day’s events from Kahentinetha Horn:

UPDATE:  6:30 PM STILL APRIL 20, 2006

Canada hasn't learned its lesson.  It wants another Oka summer!  200 RCMP are going to back up the Ontario Provincial Police OPP.   Instead of figuring out to negotiate a solution and maybe give back something they stole, they decided to use force again.  This is a one trick pony.  They are presently waiting at the Hamilton airport where they have choppers and "swat whipping gear" to whip "dem  stubborn Injuns" into shape.   They have all the toys, gadgets and guns.   The whole 9 whistles!  If they leave them behind, we can dress them up with feathers and warrior badges, eh!

Misinformation continues.

It is Canada and Ontario who are violating the jurisdiction of the Indigenous people.  According to their own constitution, we have to validly give up our lands and sovereignty under Section 132 of the BNA Act.  We never did this. This is not a domestic issue, as they say.  It is an international issue.  We began our r elationship with Britain as allies.  When the British split themselves up into Canada, United States and Britain, we never agreed to join any of them.  We've never agreed to be anything but allies.  Under international law one state cannot absorb another without the fully informed consent of the majority of the population.  Canada agrees with this formula.  In the Quebec Succession Reference, it said that a province could not leave without the consent of a clear majority on a clear question.  Canada and Ontario don't want to play fair.  They still want to be colonizers.  That's why they think they can run around like a bunch of big bullies, instead of learning of history and stealing what isn't theirs.

According to the Kaianereh'ko:wa, the Women are the title holders of the land.  We hold it in trust for our future generations.  It belongs to our future generation.  None of the so-called treaties that Canada claims to rely on are valid.  None were signed with the authority of the people.  Of course, none were signed by the future generations because they weren't born yet.

It's not like the settlers will have no place to live.

They recognize the rights that they agreed to respect. In 1784 General Haldimand made a proclamation on behalf of the British.  He promised that Britain would protect the Six Nations right to occupy our land for six miles on either side of the Grand River from its mouth to its source.  The public needs to be know that it is Canada and Ontario who refuse to come to the table and deal with laws and documents that back us up.  Canadian leaders are announcing they wish they knew how to solve this problem.  There is no problem.  They just have to stay off our land, take their police away, stop trying to invade and stop giving fraudulent titles to squatters.  It's all in their archives.  Canadians just have to look it up.

MEDIA BLACK OUT IS OVER FOR NOW.  SIX NATIONS STAND UP TO TOTALARIANISM.  WHAT'S NEXT?

MNN.  April 20, 2006.  1:45 PM.  Thursday.  The Rotin'oshon'ni Six Nations, with our brothers, sisters, friends and allies, took a stand against totalitarian might.  We could not give into it.  It would have had a ripple effect through all of society.  We stood up for law and order on behalf of everybody.  It's not over.  We repelled the police.  Our supporters came and stood with us.  We now wait.

Right now 50 Quebec Police SQ are standing with binoculars at the end of Mercier Bridge staring across the St. Lawrence River at us here in Kahnawake.  An elderly supporter took out her warrior flag and hung it out on her balcony in a high rise in Toronto.  Canadians are angry.  They feel like they've been lied to.  Vital information has been kept from them.

The media black out is over.  Our protest is on the front page.  But what does all this mean?  Why was it blacked out to begin with?  What good is freedom of the press if the press is in the pockets of whoever controls the government?  The Ontario Provincial Police OPP had a press conference at 1:00 today.  They're carrying out a court order, the legality of which we question.  The Ontario government doesn't want to take the blame.  The Canadian government's Indian Affairs Department doesn't want to take the responsibility.  [Why should they?  They're the ones responsible for most of the frauds suffered by the Six Nations in the first place].   They both say. "It's a police matter".

16 protesters were removed from the Caledonia building site using violence and threats.  OPP said they were merely trying to serve a court order taken out by Henco Industries, an American Corporation.  No one has explained how and why the courts and the police became puppets of American businesses.  No one is taking responsibility for the attack on the Six Nations people.  Does this mean that this is a police state?  Who rules the police anyway?  Are the cops in charge?  They seem to be able to do what they want.  Who's next?  Welcome to the new world order!

The Ipperwash Inquiry doesn't seem to have had any effect on the agenda of the OPP.  They are now dictating to the government, attorneys general, crown attorneys and politicians.  Everyone is afraid of the power of the police, except the Indians.  The politicians have made laws giving so much power to the police that they have created a monster that is taking over.  They cannot put the genie back into the bottle that they opened.

But the resistance at Six Nations is not what the police expected.  To begin with, none of the people were carrying weapons, other than cameras.  The news blackout was broken because the story got too big for Canada to control.  They could not stop people from expressing themselves, at least not without killing us all off.  We must have our say, no matter how hard whoever controls the government tries to shut us up.  We see that the public is angry because the media never told them what was going on.  Suddenly the issue that has been going on for 52 days is thrown in their faces.

Say the OPP, "This is no Ipperwash [when they attacked Indigenous protesters in 1995 and killed Dudley George]. We are not taking orders from politicians" [Does this mean they're become a law onto themselves].  The OPP, they tell us, only enforces the law.  Monte Quinter, an Ontario politician, said that the whole question of Six Nations lands has been before the Ontario legislature.  "We've got to negotiate with the people", said the NDP Indian Affairs critic.  Most said they wanted a peaceful resolution.  The facts have to go before the people.  Why is it that the Canadian media never carries any information to inform the public about Indigenous land claims?  This is why Canadians are surprised by what happened at Ipperwash, Oka and now at Six Nations.  It seems that the Conservative party in opposition are still pushing their agenda.  They would like to see the Liberals, who are in power, send the police in to continue the Mike Harris policy of using brute force on anyone who opposes his government.  They want the Liberals to make the same mistake that they made at Ipperwash.  This lead to a big inquiry and a huge black eye for the Conservatives.

If Canada had gotten away with the media black out, the outcome would been a lot worse.  Because Indigenous news outlets sent messages worldwide, Canada could not hide their dirty underwear anymore.  We have to thank our brothers and sisters all over the world who inundated Canadian officials with questions.  Our people could have been killed and no one would have known about it.  It's strange too that Henco is an American company and the New York Times recently put a story on its front page demonizing the Mohawks.  Is this all part of the plan?

Once the news got out, the police had to back off.  The Indians had cameras everywhere.  The OPP did not want to be on television beating up the Indians.  A few Indians were arrested.  Then they were replaced by more people.  Ontario and Canada are not sure what to do now.  This indicates to us that the Canadian demagogues had a plan to see how far they could get by using force and hiding it.  If they could have gotten get away with it, they could do it elsewhere.  If they could control us, they could do it on anyone, native or non-native.  We were at the point of tipping down the horrible slope that the people of Chile and Argentina know so well.

Canada has to sit down with the real owners of the land and not anyone else.

Also, Canada can only negotiate after peace has been established.  Canada may think this unfortunate.  They have to get used to the idea they can't grab everything.  They have to show the world there is going to be no more violence and threats.  Only then can we come forward without fear of being arrested.

We know what was done to our chiefs in the past. In the 1600's our ancestors were invited to parlay with the government and were attacked, killed or imprisoned.  We never saw them again.  We still have this mistrust for a very good reason.  We want open and transparent assurances.  We want international observers.  The people are the leaders.  The chiefs are merely spokesmen for the people and have no power but to carry out the will of the people.  The government and police don't understand true democracy.  Our people will not fall for their old colonial tricks.  We will not let any of our people be set up, put on ships and die in Europe.

All over the world despotic leaders are attacking people, putting them in jails, concentration camps, separating them from loved ones, without lawyers or habeas corpus.  It's been creeping closer and closer.  Look at Guantanamo.  Look at security certificates that can be issued in Canada without letting the accused victim or their lawyer know what the evidence against them is.  It has become impossible to put proof forward even cases of mistaken identity.

We want to show what we have to do when the powerful try to take control of the masses.  We  have been through this many times in the past.  We know who we are dealing with.  We can't be fooled into falling for their trap.

The media blackout was a total violation of freedom of speech which is right in the constitution of Canada.  The Six Nations had our backs against the wall.  We did the only thing we could do in a nonviolent way.  We are doing this for all oppressed people everywhere in the world.  We want them to see someone standing up to the power of mass control of the human race.  We ask all people to stand with us in solidarity.  We are doing it for all of us.

We want to help stop the enslavement of everyone who use totalitarian means of brute force.  The only protection we have is for the media to tell everybody what is happening.  Media you're your job.  Don't black us out.  Don't let the controllers of the government shut you down.  Become involved with us.

Mohawks Close Mercier Bridge

The following from the Canadian Press. Worth noting, for those of you who are not from Canada – the Mercier Bridge connects the Island of Montreal to the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake on the South Shore. In 1990, during the Oka Crisis, Mohawk Warriors seized the bridge and held it for five weeks, in solidarity with Mohawks at Kanesatake who had set up blockades to prevent bulldozers from breaking ground for a golf course that was to be built on a native burial ground. Thus the symbolic significance of this action.

Canadian Press Published: Thursday, April 20, 2006
MONTREAL - A group of Quebec Mohawks are supporting the occupation of a construction site near Hamilton, Ontario, by aboriginal protesters.

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers raised a banner and Mohawks flags on a bridge near Montreal today, snarling traffic.

Mohawk band council spokesman Eric Cardinal says the bridge was blocked for about a half an hour.

Cardinal says the gesture was done in solidarity with the occupation of the southwestern Ontario construction site by aboriginal protesters in Caledonia.

He says there are no further plans to disrupt traffic on the Montreal bridge.

Oh yeah: does anybody have photos or video footage of today’s events in Caledonia?

Likewise, reports on other protests/solidarity actions from around the country… please send them in!

Ontario Provincial Police Attack Six Nations Reclamation

Early this morning the Ontario Provincial Police attacked the reposession at Douglas Creek, just outside of Caledonia in Ontario. The site had been occupied by members of the Mohawk Nation and their supporters for fifty one days.

Below is a lengthy report by Kahentinetha Horn who was there when the police attacked. One hopes readers will understand if it is at times slightly disjointed – it was clearly written as events unfolded.

What must be put front and center, and repeated, is that the initial police attack was repelled. Nine people were arrested and unknown numbers brutalized, but as of 8:30 am all police had been driven off as hundred of people from Six Nations reservation moved onto the site.

This may be a victory, but the day is still young. People who can are strongly urged to get themselves to the reclamation/occupation site (see Mapquest here for directions).

If you cannot get there, consider what action you ca take where you are. Pickets, demos, whatever. Or else you can always phone/fax/email the criminals responsible for this:

ALERT!  ALERT!  OPP INVADES SIX NATIONS - AIDED BY INDIAN TRAITORS - GO AND WITNESS
Thursday, April 20th 2006

WATCH FOR FURTHER UPDATES

4:20 am the OPP attacked to arrest them.  Hauled first 9 off.  Some protesters took the Caledonia bridge.  Reserve people arrived and repelled the cops.   At least 150 heavily armed cops.  Vans, trucks, paddy wagons, ambulances (for the cops).  They repelled them.  The cops came back.  They were repelled again.  Now at 9:00 am the people have taken the land in question back.

These are backways and cops are not likely to be looking at it too much.

8:30 am OPP DISRUPTS PEACE IN QUIET CALEDONIA
The OPP has created an ongoing battle.  They sit in their cars, give out false news reports, and wait for reinforcements to come in to squash the Six Nations people but they can't.  Everyone is reporting to everyone.

All police have been chased off the perimeter of Douglas Estates for now.  Cop were sneaking behind the unfinished houses.  One woman went over.  A women cop told her she was under arrest.  "What do you mean I'm under arrest.  You're violating the laws, both ours and international law".  Other cops came out and wrestled her down on the ground.  She fought all of them.  They kneed her to handcuff her.  She started booting the cops.  Then other Indians arrived on the scene and chased the cops off.  As they were leaving they shot her son in back with tasers.  The big woman cop was carrying a big gun, something like an Ouzi.  "It was a big one".  Those cops were fully packed, she said.  They failed to arrest her because she resisted.  There are 9 arrested.  They're supposed to only keep them for 2 hours.  'We haven't seen them back yet".  The People are shutting Caledonia down.  "We are not armed.  We got our land back.  Were in!  We're at the fire!"

At the 6th  Line where the Douglas Estates comes out on the road at the entrance, out to Highway 6 that goes onto the rez.  The bypass that goes around Caledonia.  At the 6th line overpass, the people there had been blocking that road, they were attacked by the cops, paddy wagons were there.  They fought back. It was a brawl.  People started coming from the rez and supported them.  Immediately there were hydro poles around which they threw on the road and set on fire.  They are cutting off Highway 6 the main supply line that goes goes to Nanticoke Hydro Electric plant down on Lake Erie.  It is the main transport truck road to Hamilton.  This is being blocked.

Some protesters are still holding Caledonia Bridge, the main artery of the city.  It's total confusion.

If you have satellite TV, look for Hamilton CH which has a live feed.  They have helicopters filming everything.

8:00 am
It is an ongoing situation.  9 people arrested.

There is fighting going on at the No. 6 Line Bridge.  It is blocked off.  The traditional Longhouse people put a fire there and the OPP pepper sprayed them.  But the people started fighting back.  The people have moved onto the main bridge in Caledonia.  The people moved the police off the land and are going back to the main door and are still there holding on.  The cops are still on the road shutting down the bypass.  The OPP were chased off by the people and told to get out.  OPP got off the land and are in their cars watching and waiting for "orders".

Get the news on the radio stations, newspapers, television.

7:05 am.  Two snipers were chased off by the people.  They have 50 cops trapped in, who can't get out.  A media black out could work against them.  More cops are going to come in.  Indians don't have weapons but they do have tons of cameras.

In Ipperwash there was a media blackout.  The only way the information got out was because some of the people told what they saw.  That's why we need people in there.  The police showed in that public inquiry there was a deliberate attempt to stop the press from finding out.  There were attacks upon people with cameras, those who tried to get the story out.  What the police learned is how to do this the right way next time.  This is it.  They learned all the weaknesses   We learned the invaders are psychologically twisted people who pretend to be supporting the law.  These are megalomaniacs who think they can say what the law is because they have access to guns.  This time they will do it "right".  The CTV have made two major movies showing what happens when these twisted personalities are allowed free reign on Indians.  We get killed.

There are back room deals in police headquarters to hide the information and protect the police officers that give orders.  In the case of Ipperwash, three OPP police officers died suddenly just before they were going to give evidence at the enquiry.  What a strange coincidence.  It is unfortunate  that the poor jerks that are just "following orders" do not realize that they are putting their lives on the line.  They are not at risk from Indians, so why all these coincidences?

The Six Nations people have been burning tobacco during this entire occupation for their protection.  This is the only weapon that we have.  We know the truth is on our side.  We are calling upon the natural forces to give us wisdom and guidance through this whole siege.  There are repercussions to those involved when you go against people who are innocent and justified in what they are doing.  The megalomaniacs who do these kinds of things are only looking out for themselves.  They are a danger to all of society.  We Indigenous people are within our rights.  We want Canada to obey their own laws, and to respect international norms.  We want an open and fair hearing.  If the colonizers think they own our land, they need to prove it.  With this attack they have trashed any pretension to right and decency, democracy and the rule of law.  Canada is beginning to slide quickly down the slippery slope of despotism.   How can Canada decolonize.  The test lies in how they feel toward people who challenge their assumptions.  Are they going to use batons, guns and pepper spray?  Or are they going to get out their documents and take a serious look at the evidence.

The answer is obvious.  Just look at what is happening today.  This is a colonial government's hard core. Canada does not believe in reasoned researched and documented solutions.  We are seeing how colonial government is going to deal with any kind of questioning of their "might makes right" authority.  These are the signs of how a tyrannical government is going to suppress the people from expressing legitimate dissent against a takeover by the powerful elitist interests that are involved.  It appears that individual rights are being eliminated systematically all over Turtle Island.  This destruction of dissent at Six Nations is done under the cover of media darkness.  This is the way it will be done in the future against all people across Turtle Island.  This is an experiment in police state tactics against unarmed people who are exercising our rights.

These are the lessons they learned at Gustafsen Lake in 1995 where 77,000 rounds of ammunition were shot at the Indians.  In Saskatoon, where Six Indian boys were found frozen to death outside the city put there by police officers.  In Winnipeg where J.J. Harper was murdered by the Winnipeg police.  At  Ipperwash where Dudley George was murdered in cold blood by the OPP.  There are over 500 Indigenous women who have "disappeared" and the police have done nothing about it.  In the 1960's there was a complaint made in British Columbia because men were looking for Indian children to have sex with them in the streets.  The police did nothing about it.  Child prostitution is an on-going problem in Vancouver.  We don't want the blood lust of Canada's police force to be whetted by spilling the blood of Indians.  This vampire regime is moving in on Indians like sharks who smell blood in the water.

We don't want the

6:45 am
Go to Six nations.  Take part in the Canadian "democratic" process.  Get pepper sprayed.  Get beat up.  Get arrested.  Get killed.  No one will know what is going on.  Seriously, the media black out is giving the lawless their power.  They can do anything they want and who knows where it will stop.  Take photos and tell your friends.  We don't want another Chile.  The state has been involved in murders before like Anna May Aquash.  These attackers find a place where they can live out their bizarre fantasies and manias.  These people have a twisted view of society and a gun is put in their hands.  No psychological testing is done on these guys in police, armies, and bureaucracies.  The only test for surviving is a willingness to "follow orders", not the law.  These people have no concept of what the law or true democratic rule is.

6:20 AM
Cops all over the place.  People are there.  More people coming.  Pepper sprayed.  So far they let everybody go.  Some might have been seized.  Don't know.   Canada using Gestapo tactics instead of making things right.  Canada following big brother george bush mentality - invasion, containment, imprisonment and torture of Indigenous people and their families.  Next Canada will start hunting down those who continue to protect and try to maintain the sov and jurisdiction of our people.  lets not be surprised if Canada puts a deck of 52 for its most wanted Indigenous people and their friends and allies.  Free land is our land that is free of Indians.

At 5:55 am this morning, Thursday, April 20th, over 150 heavily armed Ontario Provincial Police with Native mercenaries as body shields, invaded Six Nations land.  Some carrying M-16's, in riot gear.  6th line is still open.  The Rotinoshon'no are not fighting because they are unarmed.  Tear gas has been thrown at them.  Some were pepper sprayed.  The traitors are the same kind of people who stabbed Crazy Horse, Geronimo, and those who fought for our sovereignty and our lives.

One bridge to the property has been closed.

Witnesses required.  This will not be on the national news.  Go there and see what is going on.   This is a scary precedent.  Take pictures.  Make reports.  Let the world know.   report.  REPORT.  REPORT.  Help the people so no one gets hurt.  we never wanted violence.  Canada has opened to the door to covert state violence on a scale that is unprecedented in Canada.  This si the end of any pretense of negotiation with Indigenous people.  they're just going to take the land.  Canada came in with armaments, guns, paddy wagons (we don’t know what's in there).

Don't let Canada become another Chile.  Tell the world.  The Rotino'shon:we are on our own land.

A Good Article About Caledonia Standoff

A good article about the standoff in Caledonia has just been posted on The Dominion website; see: It’s Not A Land Claim by Hillary Bain Lindsay

Alert from Kahentinetha Horn

SUPPORTERS ASKED TO STAND BY!
SIX NATIONS TALKS BREAK DOWN
CANADA REFUSES TO RESPECT SIX NATIONS BAND COUNCIL VOTE AND SNUBS PEOPLE
OPP SAYS "YOU ONLY HAVE HOURS LEFT"

We are asking our brothers, sisters, friends and allies to continue to stand by and support us if and when OPP come in.  Please do everything you can to stop this before it happens.  There is a big OPP buildup, with forces coming in from Hamilton and surrounding cities.  Paddy wagons are already here.

MNN.  Tuesday, April 18th, 2006.  3:15 pm.

At 2:00 pm, on Tuesday, April 18th, the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy, Onondaga Longhouse, stated Canada absolutely refuses to address the land issue with Confederacy chiefs.  It is a 200 year old outstanding land claim of the Six Nations.  This is the 50th day of the standoff.  Protesters have stopped Henco Industries from building an illegal  housing development on their land.  The Confederacy has proposed a peaceful lawful resolution.

Canada only wants to deal with the Indian Act band council they illegally enforced on the territory.  In 1924 Canada sent in the RCMP to violently depose the legitimate Confederacy council.  They seem to be planning the same tactics again.  The 1924 armed invasion was a military coup implemented by the Canadian government using the RCMP.  They say it was a declaration of war.  The OPP coming onto our territory is a declaration of war again.  Under our law, the Kaianereh'ko:wa/Great Law, we have every right to defend our men, women and children by any means necessary.

Henco is taking the OPP to court tomorrow for not enforcing the illegal injunction.  Henco seems to think that private companies can order the OPP around like an army of private mercenaries.  The OPP are allegedly going after the protesters before the court hearing and have sent a message to the protesters, "You only have hours left".  Two paddy wagons are already parked nearby and the OPP cruisers are driving up and down Highway 6, all "swat teamed up".

On Sunday, April 16th at a people's meeting the Confederacy and the band council agreed to work together and let the Confederacy chiefs and clan mothers deal with the land issue.  Legally they are the only ones who can as Canada and their band councils are recent creations.  Only councilor Dave General refused to go along with the people.  He read out Canada and Ontario's position against what the people wanted.  He wants a "poll" to be conducted which he and his masters can control.  If this happens, we want impartial international observers to make sure it is legal.  Otherwise it's just a rubber stamp for the establishment.

Obviously what's happening now was Canada and Ontario's intention all along.  They do not want the Confederacy to deal with the land issue.  Canada is clearly in default.  They do not want to come to a peaceful agreement with the Six Nations on the illegal building of non-native housing on their land and the many other land issues that plague Six Nations people.  Canada is caught.  There is an iron clad promise under the Haldimand Agreement from the Crown to protect Six Nations people from encroachment.  This has been violated for over 200 years.  Canada and Ontario prefer to back Henco, an American corporation.  They do not want the Indians to get anything.

Canada is ready to create a situation where there will be a bloody confrontation between the police and the Indians.  Things could get out of hand.  Nobody will know about it because the media blackout already in place will be continued.  At the same time many friends and allies of the Six Nations are being targeted.  The Indians are always ready to talk peace and negotiate.

We need people to head over there with video cameras and other cameras to take pictures.  That isn't threatening, is it?  If the OPP behave correctly and not evict people from their own land, then there will be nothing to hide.

If Canada and Ontario are allowed to expropriate Six Nations for private American corporations, where will it stop?  Predators are waiting to come in and take over the 20,000 acres that the Six Nations people are living on right now.  Land values in this area are skyrocketing because of the influx of immigrants from all over the world.  We Rotino'shon:ni are in the way of so-called "progress".  The Haldimand Deed guaranteed that there would never be any encroachment on our land ever!

In 5 years it is foreseen that cities on the Haldimand Tract will more than double their population.  To allow this, the federal government is relinquishing its trust responsibility that it would always protect the Rotinol'shon:ni/Iroquois from any encroachment whatsoever.  Beware!  The federal government is not credible as they are not willing to uphold this solemn promise.

Canada’s ‘3 Blind Mice’ Want to Appease Squatters at the Expense of Those ‘Bad’ Six Nations Indians

I received this earlier this week from Kahentinetha Horn – my apologies for not uploading it earlier:

MNN.  April 17, 2006.  Ontario has a population of about 10 million.  It's growing so that within a very short time there will be 13 million.  They have to take over Indian lands to accommodate these people.  They don't want the Haldimand Tract to be in dispute.  They want investors from all over the world to have no fear of putting their money into towns, homes, golf courses, highways and industries throughout Rotino'shon:ni land in southern Ontario.

They should instead be working on a plan to make Indians, who will never relinquish title to our lands, to become their partners in all of these developments.  The Crees of Quebec were made beneficiaries in the James Bay Agreement instead of being robbed.  If millions of people are coming onto our land, we demand a say in what's happening.  As the land is held by the Indigenous Women, they need our permission to do anything.  We must be consulted on everything that's going to be done on all of the Haldimand Tract.

Ontario and Canada can't do anything without consulting us, the Confederacy.  They can't go running to their illegal band council puppets.

If you read the Hamilton Spectator, you would think everything is "hunky dory".  They state there is going to be a buy-out of Henco, land is going to be returned to the Indians and the Ontario Provincial Police are going to take down their command post.  There is even going to be a campaign to educate our tenants about us.

Indian Affairs even brought some puppet chiefs from British Columbia into the circus to guide the Six Nations into the Canadian way of how land claims should be dealt with.  They're putting out the lie that Douglas Creek Estates is "privately held" land which is being claimed by Six Nations people.  It is and always has been communally held sovereign land.

The land under the protection of the Haldimand Proclamation is 384,451 hectares of land which is six miles on both sides of the Grand River from its mouth to its source.  The whole tract consists of over 1 million hectares.  The land was stolen, natural resources were fraudulently extracted on numerous occasions over the centuries and funds were misappropriated and invested.  Sometimes they were outright unauthorized loans made to such institutions as McGill University and the Law Society of Upper Canada. They never paid back these loans.  This creates a major bias on the part of the judiciary against the Six Nations.  We need an international mediator that is neutral, has no interest in the outcome and is acceptable to both parties.

Canada says they are not accountable for actions of the British Crown before Canada was founded in 1867!  They've been running that lie for years. This is like the colonial practice of sleazy business men who abandon one bankrupt company and start fresh with a new one.

The 1978 Vienna Convention on the Succession of States says you can't get out of your obligations by turning yourself into another state.  The consent of the other parties is required before a successor state can escape the obligations undertaken by a predecessor state.  We never gave that.  Canadians seem to have forgotten that they're the ones who benefited from Britain's agreements with us.  There is no reason why the people who are Indigenous to Britain and stayed behind should have to compensate the Indigenous people of Turtle Island for the benefits they got as the people who immigrated to our land

It is sad that Canada refuses to decontaminate its laws and get rid of colonial thinking.  Those people negotiating on behalf of Canada could be presenting the kind of partnership and solidarity that could lead to a strong economic partnership.  It should be based on Canada honoring its agreements with Indigenous people.  When people work together in a positive way more can be achieved.

This proposed solution means that millions of more dollars and decades of more effort will be misspent on legal battles.  Are we going to continue to throw documents and legal arguments at each other?  There is no dispute.  We own this land.  Is Canada going to continue to harass and imprison the brightest and best of our young people?  When is Canada going to allow us human rights?

The Spectator is moaning on and on about losses to non-native developers, carpenters, plumbers, roofers, brick layers and home owners.  It completely ignores our losses over the past two centuries.  We have been denied our own economic, social and political system.

Most of Six Nations people are opposed to the band council.  Negotiations are still at the point of an OPP gun.  They are itching to try out their fancy weaponry and enforce an illegal court order on us.  We never gave consent for Canada and Ontario to have jurisdiction over us.  They complain that this standoff "is giving rise to disrespect for the law and the police!"  However, they represent the country that has totally disrespected our laws and agreements to conduct a nation-to-nation relationship.

The OPP has no respect.  When will they come clean on exactly what they did at Ipperwash when they killed Dudley George over a land issue?  We're waiting to hear them say, "We're going to talk instead of shoot you".

As stated by the Australian court in Mabo, "we were not a "legal desert" when the British arrived".  The idea that only British colonists or their descendants like Australians and Canadians were the only people who had "law" is a legal fiction.

At the Sunday April 16th emergency meeting [an emergency for Canada], the band council voted 7 to 6 in favor of turning land matters over to the Rotino'shon:ni Confederacy.  In other words, we'd like to see them keep the same standards of excellence that they had back in the 1920's.  Council meetings were open to the public and were fully recorded so that the public had a better understanding of the Six Nations people.  The newspapers then were not advocates for any side.  They were not a propaganda sheet for the government and the police like they are now.

The band council decision to hand matters concerning land over to the traditional Confederacy council that Canada violently deposed in 1924 is a political breakthrough.  It suggests that Canada can no longer "buy" enough support to keep up its pretense that their puppet government is legitimate.  It shows that even those people who take part in the band council elections are aware of the frauds that were perpetrated on the Six Nations people.

This does not mean that Canada will respect the right to self-determination of the Six Nations people.  The Minister of Indian affairs still has a right to veto it.  This Indian Act provision violates international law and is ultra vires the Six Nations.  We don't really need the Minister's consent or a resolution from the illegal band council to do anything!  The band councilors' move reflects the attempt by the Six Nations people to express their will in terms that Canada must accept.  Canada and Ontario were told to honor our wishes.  The Supreme Court of Canada has recognized that "aboriginal rights" must be interpreted as understood by the Indigenous people.

How do you think Indian Affairs responded to this?

Their point man, Dave 'Colonial' General, did not vote in favor of this resolution.  Instead he read out his, Canada and Ontario's schemes on how to resolve the occupation.  They want an extension to the current Douglas Creek Estates' injunction to May 24th 2006 [rather than disposing of it because it's illegal].  They want a poll to be conducted of all members 18 years of age and older on whom should oversee the land issue.  Will it be the traditional Confederacy, the band council or a jointly appointed committee?   The band council is supporting the Confederacy and Dave General is still pushing the colonial agenda.  Hey, Dave, whose payroll are you on anyway?

Dave, Canada and Ontario, the Three Blind Mice, want to send a notice out on April 19th.  The want the poll to take place on May 22nd, on "Bread and Cheese Day" [when everybody gets constipated.  Let's hope that's not how they vote!].  This is when Queen Victoria distributed bread and cheese to celebrate her birthday.  After she died the practice fell into disrepute.  It was revived in the late 1920's when the people were struggling to control the Agricultural Hall they had built and was illegally confiscated by the band council.

Dave asks for this, "in good faith [so that] all parties will honor the result of the poll".

Dave and the other mice know full well that this is an old deceptive trap.  It is like the time in 1686 when Marquis de Denonville invited the Rotino'shon:ni for a peace meeting in Montreal.  When they arrived, most of our people were either killed or forced into galley slavery or died in prisons in France.  Is Dave trying to invite all the Six Nations people to his peace treaty and trick us into sanctioning this land theft?  We are very suspicious of voting in any polls or election run by his colonial master.  We have our own way of making decisions which includes all people of all ages according to the Kaianereh'ko:wa.

Only about 3% will take part and they are all employed by the band council.  Dave and his puppet masters want an agreement with Henco Industries, a colonial court date as soon as possible, the appointment of a polling officer [we thought polls were for dogs] and to get the vote done right away.

Let's ask them this!  Would the colonial people agree to be dispossessed of their lands and homes on the basis of a poll?   We don't think so.

There are 22,000 members of the Six Nations community.   A legitimate poll should have at least 13,000 to 14,000 people voting.  Only 500 people voting would be completely illegal according to international law.  A valid poll would sanction the traditional chiefs to speak on our behalf.  There has to be complete disclosure and fully informed consent of a majority of the people.  Otherwise it would be the decision of a small group of elitists who are likely pawns of the outside interests.

They want to use such a fraudulent vote as showing that we have agreed to cede the entire Haldimand Tract.  Dave and his cohorts want to say, "We have settled this conflict once and for all.  We have relinquished all our interests except for where our people actually live.  Just think, we will get some cheese, beads, promises of some money and a few parcels of land", or words to that effect.  Remember, the vote will be run by Indian Affairs.  To be fair and legal, it should be run by the United Nations.

The people say emphatically once again, "We aren't leaving until all the land is in our name and we have control over it.  Any settlers who want to occupy and use our land has to consult us and get our permission, according to law.  Start showing us some good faith!"
