The Toronto Burlesque and Vaudeville Alliance
The Toronto Burlesque and Vaudeville Alliance (TBVA) started in 2003 as a web-based forum for burlesque performers, traditional dancers, strippers, magicians, comedians, contortionists, circus performers, freaks and geeks, mind readers, street buskers and all manner of vaudevillian acts to post their shows, inquire about bookings, meet out of town performers, share stories, post bios and photos, or just vent. Over time, a true community has developed in Toronto, to the mutual delight of burlesque and vaudeville performers and their enthusiasts! The group can be found at:

Since its inception, the Toronto Burlesque and Vaudeville Alliance has produced the first collaborative burlesque show featuring all-local artists, Bad Girls Run Amok, as part of the Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts. Shortly after, they donated their time and energy for a giant fundraiser for Tsunami Relief in February 2005. Both shows sold out. This is the TBVA’s second annual fundraising calendar. This year, all profits are donated to Inter Pares, a grass-roots organization supporting community development overseas.
InterPares
Working or change… among equals
Inter Pares works with social change organizations around the world who share our analysis that poverty and injustice are caused by inequalities within and between nations, and who are working to promote social and economic justice in their communities and societies.
Inter Pares — the name means “among equals” — was founded in 1975 to practice a new form of international cooperation, conceived not as charity but as profound solidarity. Inter Pares’ work is grounded in the belief that we and our counterparts are equals, working in common cause to confront injustice and to promote more sustainable models of human community and interaction in the world we share.
Inter Pares supports communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Canada to create sustainable livelihoods and healthy futures, including humanitarian assistance and human rights protection for people caught up in civil violence. It supports people’s struggles for self-determination and their efforts to challenge structural obstacles to change, accompanying people in their efforts to hold their governments accountable and to promote democratic social and economic policies. Through advocacy and coalition-building, Inter Pares also links social action at home with social change work abroad, promoting relationships of mutual support among activists around the globe.
