The Parliamentary Report on islamic veil showed that the state couldn't even give a number of women wearing the "burqa" in France, for the simple reason that they are almost none !<br /><br />The law is in fact primarily concerned with the ''hijab'', which covers only the face.<br /><br />I agree with your post: this law, and similar laws in Belgium, etc., are a way to reboost "national identity" in a xenophobic and islamophobic attempt - notwithstanding our personal views on religion.<br /><br />It should be underlined, however, first that a very important part of women wearing hijab in France are not only of French nationality, but often converts to Islam coming from christian or whatever backgrounds. <br /><br />Second, note that a large part of the Left oppose this stupid law, and we should give credit to them (see the TERRA network, etc.).
